About this work

This is included in a collection of graphite drawings is my debut body of work; a love letter to drawing the female figure, 'Studies in Stillness'. Born out of lying dormant for decades as an artist, 'Studies in Stillness', slowly awakened within me and then on paper. Intimate figurative drawings that explore the quiet emotional landscape of the female. Through moments of pause, the work considers themes of beauty, vulnerability, and intimacy of silence and stillness in our everyday. Some drawings are influenced by Italian sculptures by Lorenzo Bartolini that are living in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. After 10 years of saving images from a visit to the gallery, each woman comes to life again. This period of art history focused on simplicity and symmetry; the virtues of art. Drawing from live models gave me the foundation to complete additional works with the same passion. Simplicity is what I sought in this series; celebrating the lines of the female figure, virtuous, simple, and balanced.

About the artist

Sarah Jacobs (1983) is an emerging American artist whose work centers on drawing and mark making as a means of exploring beauty, resilience, memory, and the complexities of being a woman; today and yesterday. Working primarily in graphite, charcoal, and colored pencil, she creates works that balance classical craftsmanship with a touch of modernity. Her intentions are to create a drawing. She specifically strays away from hyper realism, so the viewer sees the work of a human, the work of a hand, the work of a woman. Her lifelong fascination with drawing portraiture and the human figure is informed by a deep appreciation for art history and the enduring influence of Old Masters. Jacobs holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and Criticism and spent nearly two decades working within the professional art world as a gallery director, private art consultant, and broker dealer for artists and collectors in the US and Internationally. These experiences continue to shape her understanding of how art is seen, collected, and lived with. Jacobs was born in Arkansas. She currently lives and works in Houston, Texas and Vail, Colorado.
