Women In Art's role — escrow and mediation, not shipping
Important context before you read on: Women In Art is a marketplace. We hold buyer payments in escrow for 14 days from delivery and mediate refunds. We do NOT take physical possession of any artwork, do NOT arrange, fund or book any outbound or return shipping, do NOT carry separate transit insurance, and are not a party to the contract of carriage between the artist and their courier. The artist is the seller, the shipper, and the insured party. Our refunds are processed against the held escrow funds, in accordance with the rules below.
§ 02
Our 14-day satisfaction guarantee
We want every collector to live with work they love. From the date of purchase confirmation, you have fourteen (14) full days to request a full refund for any reason. During this window the funds are still held by Women In Art — your refund is processed quickly, with no questions asked, directly back to your original payment method. This window covers the typical inspection period after delivery for orders shipped within the UK and most of Europe. International collectors with longer transit times: please contact us before purchasing if you have any concerns about timing.
§ 03
What you can return within 14 days
Original one-off works — paintings, drawings, and sculpture that exist as unique pieces. Any work in any category that arrives damaged, was misrepresented in the listing, or does not match the listing photographs is also refundable, regardless of whether it would otherwise be Final Sale (see §03).
§ 04
Items that are final sale (non-refundable for change of mind)
The following categories are FINAL SALE — once produced and shipped they cannot be returned for a change-of-mind refund: • Photography — signed prints, archival prints, Diasec/face-mounted works. • Prints — giclée, etching, screenprint, lithograph, monotype. • Limited editions — each edition number is logged on production. • Open editions — produced specifically for shipping to you. • Commissioned works — made specifically to your brief, no general resale value. • Bespoke framing, mounting, or custom-cut sizing requested by you specifically. • Digital downloads, gift cards, and any product clearly marked Final Sale on the listing page. Important: Final Sale does not mean unprotected. If a Final Sale item arrives DAMAGED, LOST IN TRANSIT, or MATERIALLY DIFFERENT from the listing, you are still entitled to a full refund under §02 — please follow the request-a-return process in §04.
§ 05
How to request a return
Sign in, open your order from Account → Orders, and click "Request a refund". You'll be asked for a brief reason (damaged, not as described, changed mind, etc.) and a short note. We acknowledge every request within 24 hours and process approved refunds within 3-5 working days. If your artwork arrived damaged, please photograph the outer packaging, the protective wrapping, and the damaged area from multiple angles before unpacking further. These photographs are essential for insurance claims.
§ 06
Return shipping (arranged between buyer and artist)
Important: Women In Art does not arrange, fund, take physical possession of, or insure any artwork at any point. All shipping — outbound delivery AND any return leg — is a transaction between the buyer and the artist directly. Our role is to mediate, hold funds in escrow, and process the refund once the work is safely returned. For accepted change-of-mind returns: the buyer is responsible for arranging fully insured, tracked return shipping to the artist's studio address (provided once your return is approved). Return shipping must use the original packaging where possible — re-using the original crate or padded box dramatically reduces the risk of return-transit damage. The buyer pays the return shipping cost. Damaged-on-arrival or not-as-described returns: do NOT discard the original packaging — the carrier insurance claim depends on the original packaging being available for inspection. In these cases the artist pays for the return label and arranges collection (or instructs the buyer to dispose of the work, where return is uneconomic). Women In Art neither collects nor books any return shipment; we only release or recoup escrowed funds once the parties confirm the physical outcome.
§ 07
After day 14
After the 14-day window has closed, refunds are at our discretion and handled case-by-case in consultation with the artist. We will always engage in good faith if there is a genuine issue — damaged work, lost in transit, misrepresentation — but routine "change of mind" returns will not be accepted after day 14. To discuss a post-14-day refund, email hello@womeninart.com with your order ID, photographs, and a clear description of the issue.
§ 08
Chargebacks
Filing a chargeback with your card issuer should be a last resort, not a first response. If you have a genuine issue, our refund process is faster, simpler, and means your relationship with the artist stays intact. Chargebacks filed without first contacting us may be contested with documentation showing fair handling.
§ 09
Refund timing
Approved refunds are processed within 3-5 working days. Funds typically appear on your card statement within a further 3-10 working days depending on your card issuer. International cards refunded at the original exchange rate plus any FX adjustment imposed by your bank.
