About this work

It evokes the marks our lives leave behind, turning memory and feeling into a single visual narrative that blurs the tangible and the intangible. This work explores emotional and psychological imprints through a pictorial language that moves between realism and abstraction. Composed of layered materials and evocative forms, its dense, overflowing textures stand as metaphors for the internal scars we carry. The painting’s accidental, responsive process lets the image grow organically beyond full control. Traces invites viewers into the tense space where chaos and order meet, a meditation on what is lost and what remains. My technique builds up glazes and multiple layers of color and texture. I use brushes, my hands, and unconventional tools, kitchen utensils, engraving tools, and other materials, to create specific surface effects. I like to work with the duality between detailed realism and blurred, abstract textures that reveal the complexities and contradictions we carry.

About the artist

Sofía Ruíz, is a Latin American artist whose practice blends realism with dense, textured surfaces to explore the emotional and psychological dimensions of memory, identity, and otherness. Her work has been featured in institutions such as the MEAM in Barcelona, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Costa Rican Art Museum, and the Mosam Art Museum in South Korea.
