About this work
This portrait began with a fashion designer and the embroidered skirt from her label, Gowns by Roberta. I was drawn to its whimsical details: bluebells, dragonflies, and slices of citrus stitched across black fabric. In the painting, those motifs slip off the skirt and drift out across a hot-pink ground, as if the garment's world had spilled into the room around her. A teal halo outlines the figure, flattening her into something between a portrait and a fashion plate. She holds a small embroidered bag at her heart, meeting the viewer's gaze directly: composed, self-possessed, and entirely in bloom.
