About this work
My life partner works overseas, and I only see him every three months for two weeks at a time. There are many women like me in our community; due to socio-historical and other circumstances, we stay behind while the family breadwinners are employed in other countries. Here, we call wives in this situation "grasweduwees," which translates to "grass widows"—implying the men have left for greener pastures. I struggled to maintain the household on my own and felt an urge to create a self-portrait about my experience. I researched art historical paintings centred on a husband and wife and decided on American Gothic, though I intentionally omitted the husband's figure. Cold wax is a fitting medium for me because I enjoy its buttery consistency, which reminds me of domestic acts. I also appreciate its texture and the way it absorbs light; ideally, I don't want my work to be romanticized. Although the colours are bright and possess an illustrative quality that conjures a sense of narrative—much like children's books—for me, the fairy tale is both real and bizarre.
