About this work

Held in Good Company This whimsical and quietly surreal artwork explores the profound bond between a woman and her cat, and the comfort we find in caring for another living being. The exaggerated hands and feet are deliberately oversized, representing the enormous role that touch, protection and presence play in our lives. Hands are used to hold, nurture, comfort and protect, while feet represent grounding, stability and the journey we take through life. Their exaggerated scale suggests that these simple acts of connection can become much bigger than ourselves. At the centre, the black cat rests peacefully within the woman's embrace, symbolising trust, companionship and unconditional affection. The cat's watchful expression adds a little humour and mystery, reminding us that animals often become quiet witnesses to our lives. The soft blue clothing creates a feeling of calm and tenderness against the dark background, while the unusual proportions and repeated limbs introduce a dreamlike quality. Beneath the playful surface lies a more contemplative idea: sometimes the things we hold onto, and the beings we care for, give us a sense of belonging and keep us grounded in an unpredictable world. The oversized hands can therefore be seen as a visual expression of love made tangible. They are almost too large because sometimes our capacity to care, protect and hold someone close feels larger than words can express. It is a painting about love, connection, protection and the quiet sanctuary we find in the companionship of animals, wrapped in a little surrealism and a knowing touch of humour. 🐈‍⬛
