About this work

This large canvas emerged from sitting with the practice of noting what takes place in the ordinary of a day, and how the mind seeks to place meaning upon it all. How easy it tarnishes or brightens, how it weaves as it breathes, with little care for what is, and much for what it seeks to validate. I had come across this prayer and it was sitting on my table studio, whispering loudly, persistent, haunting… I am The “I” I come forth from the void into light. I am that emptiness, that hollowness beyond all consciousness. The “I”, the Id, the All. I draw my bow of rainbows across the waters. The continuum of minds with matters. I am the invisible, untouchable breeze, The undefinable atom of creation. I am The “I” Ancient Hawaiian prayer Time was one of unknown, of peaceful surrender and tense wonder, of exploration and grounding into observing versus controlling. A time of transition, healing, emergence.

About the artist

Nomadic painter working with raw pigment, charcoal, ink, thread and slow techniques, on loose canvas or paper, resulting in abstract paintings of organic bounded forms which boundaries are tested, connected, disturbed by lines, stitching, marks and adjacent open fields. Born and raised in France, the recipient of some classical artistic training through her student years, Stephanie Jeanne Marie attributes her principal education in art however, to the doing of two wonderful and eccentric elderly aunts, great collectors of textiles and antiquities, who very early on took upon themselves to educate and guide her into the wowing and “fantastic” world of history, and the art that gathered along its path. Further along, extended travels and stays, in the Himalayan region and the Indonesian archipelago, continued to inform.
