The Self Portrait as Medusa is an elaborate narrative painting, based on the mythological tale of the character Medusa. Many will respond to the commonly told tale of her turning men to stone. This is misleading. Medusa was in fact a victim who history has been retold from a patriarchal perspective. She has been historically misaligned. A beautiful mortal possessing unquestionable personable attributes in her nature. She was a priestess in the temple of Athena. She unfortunately caught the attention of Poseidon. God of the sea. Medusa rejected his advances. He aggressively forced himself upon her. Athena was angry and had a tempestuous relationship with Poseidon. She took this anger out on the poor Medusa. Blighting her beauty, turning her hair into snakes. She then cursed the poor Medusa in such a way that no man would ever gaze at her again. Her gaze would turn them to stone. Or did Athena wish to ensure that no man would violate her again? This portrait is in response to the many victims of domestic violence who post separation abuse, stalking and institutional control is an extension of their psychological abuse and control. That they are misaligned by abusers as mothers, victims and credible individuals. In a world where we are told lies are truths and the loudest voice is listened to.
