Nic 67 | 2025 | 91x62cm | £2,450 100% waste: discarded fabric, floats, paper, and hairdresser’s foils. Rainbow-rimmed glasses catching the light, Nic 67 was spotted browsing vintage records in Portobello Market on a Saturday morning. Their coat is a patchwork of stories—deep blues, fiery oranges, soft greens, and golden glimmers—each swirl a memory, each hue a mood. Multiple layered necklaces in complementary hues suggest an eye for detail and sustainable fashion. Hair streaked with silver, lips a muted plum, and boots patched with velvet and vinyl. Textile artist or creative director? From The Characters is a groundbreaking series of abstract portraits made entirely from waste. For the first time, portraits are expressed not only through shapes and colours, but through the materials themselves. Each piece imagines a person whose character emerges from the colours and materials used—transforming scraps into stories, 'trashure' into traits. Made from discarded fabric, hairdresser's foils, plastic floats, toilet paper wrap, newspapers, and other pre-loved materials, each work carries accumulated histories. Fabric that once clothed someone, foils that transformed hair, paper that conveyed information—these intimate material memories become part of each character's identity, legitimising their presence and making them more real, more valid, more present. The materials' diverse origins—spanning all sectors of society, times, and places—create a form of deconstructed materialism that makes the series inherently democratic. By stripping materials of their original context and class associations, the work liberates each element to reveal its essential properties: texture, colour, weight, memory. A luxury fabric scrap holds the same potential as a discarded newspaper; a salon foil from Mayfair sits alongside one from Brixton. This deconstruction enhances rather than diminishes materiality, allowing each component to speak not of what it once signified in social hierarchies, but of what it inherently is. Democracy is built into the very fabric of the work. This body of work is a radical act of eco-artivism and inclusion—a clear stand for the rights of women and anyone who doesn't fit in a box. It honours critical thinking and celebrates difference, challenging conformity through fluid forms and reclaimed textures. Circles—never straight lines—shape each composition, echoing the organic, non-linear nature of life and identity.
