About this work

Reflection is an assemblage collage exploring memory, identity, and the complex transition from girlhood into womanhood. Constructed from layers of decoupaged cardboard, the work creates both literal and emotional depth, inviting the viewer to look beyond the surface and into the layered histories contained within the image. At the centre of the piece is a woman drawn from a 1960s advertisement, seen only from behind as she gazes into a mirror. Within the reflection is a sepia photograph of a young girl, surrounded by layered leaves that evoke the organic, natural world of childhood. The mirror becomes a space of connection between past and present — a place where the woman encounters an earlier version of herself. The work considers the ways women are shaped by cultural expectations, appearances, and ideals of femininity, while also reflecting on the enduring presence of the child we once were. The polished artifice of the advertising image contrasts with the innocence and natural vitality of girlhood, raising questions about what is lost, preserved, or transformed as we move through life. Reflection is an exploration of the relationship between memory and identity — a visual meditation on remembering who we were before the world taught us who we should become.
