About

Iren Puj is a Hungarian-born contemporary abstract artist based in Surrey, UK. Working across oil, acrylic and mixed media, her paintings combine colour, movement, layered texture, collage and gold leaf.

Statement

Artist Statement My work is rooted in intuition, movement, texture and balance. I rarely begin with a fixed idea or sketch. I work directly on the canvas, allowing each painting to develop naturally and responding instinctively to colour, marks, layers and the space around them. I work across acrylic, oil and mixed media, often incorporating collage and gold leaf. Colour sets the mood, movement creates energy and flow, and I constantly add, remove, cover and reveal until the composition feels balanced. Although the process is spontaneous, my formal Fine Art training remains an important foundation. Years of studying composition, structure and the relationship between shapes, colours and space have become so deeply ingrained that these decisions now happen almost subconsciously. Gold has become a distinctive part of my visual language. I am drawn to the way it interacts with light and changes depending on where you stand and the time of day. I often work it into textured, uneven surfaces rather than applying it as a smooth decorative layer, allowing it to become part of the painting itself. I want my paintings to have strength and presence and to make people stop and look. I don’t want to dictate what someone should feel, because abstract art is personal. I hope instead that the work creates a connection and continues to reveal something new over time.
