Buthaina Bin Beyat is an Emirati multidisciplinary artist based in Dubai, working across weaving, painting and ceramics. Her practice explores memory, materiality and fragmentation through colour, structure and form.

Statement

I am a multidisciplinary artist whose practice integrates weaving, painting and ceramics, taking the form of wall hangings, sculptures and objects. My body of work begins at the loom, where I weave hand-painted yarn into structured surfaces. As I introduce clay, these textiles transform into sculptural objects, creating a dynamic tension between softness and rigidity. Through an experimental, process-driven approach, I explore how materials can hold memory, transformation and traces of places. Working with pigment, fibre and clay, I create imagined landscapes that draw on patterns found in nature, the built environment and material culture. Instead of recording specific sites, my works become fragments of a made-up world, where woven structures, ceramic forms and painted surfaces serve as evidence of places that exist somewhere between memory and imagination. Research is a key part of my practice, particularly the histories of women and craftmaking, as well as the cultural lives of materials. By blending traditional textile techniques with modern sculptural methods, I examine how materials can be transformed through making, bringing together textures, forms and surfaces. My studio work is guided by making as a form of thinking, allowing the work to develop through experimentation, repetition and direct engagement with materials. By moving between craft-based processes and contemporary art practice, I explore and challenge the boundaries between craft and fine art.
