Catarina Branco is an artist born in São Miguel, Azores. She holds a degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon. Her career already includes participation in various solo and group exhibitions, as well as international biennials and contemporary art fairs. As a multidisciplinary artist, her practice moves fluidly between painting, sculpture, and installation. Rooted in an expressive visual language, her work explores the tension between nature, imagination, and emotional space through layered compositions and free-form organic shapes. Drawing inspiration from botanical imagination and abstraction, Catarina Branco creates pieces that feel both instinctive and immersive, transforming painting into something physical, atmospheric, and deeply psychological. With a consolidated history of international exhibitions and a practice that continues to evolve beyond traditional boundaries, she is an artist to watch closely. This is particularly relevant at a time when contemporary collectors increasingly seek works that balance material experimentation with emotional resonance. Her ability to fuse pure gestures, sculptural presence, and lyrical abstraction positions her among a new generation of artists redefining the relationship between painting, space, and perception.

Statement

The work of the artist is characterised by an approach that crosses different fields, going beyond traditional boundaries between disciplines. Painting emerges as the central axis of her practice, expanding into three-dimensional forms. In this exhibition, Catarina Branco transforms her garden into a battlefield for the construction of hybrid images—a place of transition between painting and sculpture, between botanical delicacy and dense, rough matter. This is not a garden of perfection or a refuge of order. It is, rather, a human gesture that seeks to come to terms with the disorder of nature or imagination. The works express beauty, but not safety; they evoke a nameless place that serves creative desire, as Natália Correia said of the (poet-)artist who is occupied with inventing the world. In this space, a process of unlearning is proposed (“To know how to see without thinking, / To know how to see when one sees,” Alberto Caeiro): the landscape is not a stage, but a state of mind — it is reality itself, imagined. If, in many cases, the garden is an act of reconciliation, here it becomes an act of unrest, resisting the discipline of forms, where Catarina Branco’s untamed forms may, perhaps, domesticate the inevitable force of nature. As a female artist, her work explores the concept of the imaginary landscape as a space where memory, emotion, intuition, and imagination converge. Rather than depicting real places, she creates environments that exist between reality and dream, inviting the viewer into territories shaped by personal experience and inner reflection. Her perspective as a woman is central to her artistic practice. Through painting, she seeks to reclaim and reinterpret the landscape, transforming it from a traditionally external subject into an intimate and emotional realm. The landscapes she creates are not geographical locations but psychological and symbolic spaces that reflect vulnerability, resilience, transformation, and the complexity of the female experience. Colour, texture, and gesture play a fundamental role in her work. The artist uses them to construct immersive atmospheres that evoke feelings rather than narratives, allowing each viewer to form their own connection with the image. The absence of recognizable landmarks encourages a journey into the unknown, where imagination becomes a tool for discovery and contemplation. Her paintings are an invitation to pause and enter a world where boundaries dissolve: between the visible and the invisible, the personal and the universal, the real and the imagined. Through these imagined landscapes, she aims to create spaces of freedom, introspection, and possibility, shaped by a distinctly feminine sensibility and a deep fascination with the poetic power of nature transformed by memory and imagination.
