Statement

British artist Lórien Haynes is internationally recognised for her monumental charcoal nudes, works that command space through scale, tactility, and psychological intensity. Trained under Royal Academy of Art tutor Dilip Ur from 2002, and later continuing her development in Los Angeles with Californian painter George Small, Haynes brings classical discipline into dialogue with a bold contemporary sensibility. Her oversized charcoal figures are constructed across multiple sheets of paper, visibly taped together. The seams remain present, reinforcing both the sculptural quality of the body and the physical act of making. Layered, tactile and visceral, her drawings balance vulnerability with strength, fragility with power. Exhibited in London at The Haymarket and acquired by The Saatchi Gallery, her work has also featured in Amy Berg’s film Every Secret Thing. She now maintains an international client base ranging from corporate collectors to celebrities. After relocating to the United States, alongside her visual art practice, Haynes expanded into screenwriting and playwriting. She is a multi-award-winning writer, actress, director and producer. Her first film Everything I Ever Wanted to Tell My Daughter About Men won Best Film at the Cannes Independent Film Festival, Best Experimental Film at the Palm Springs International Film Awards and was nominated for Best Feature at the Austin Film Festival [2021] and Manchester Film Festival [2022]. Lorien won Best Actress at the New York Independent Film Awards, London Independent Film Awards and Berlin International Art Film Festival. Her latest play, Shakespeare’s Women has been performed at Shakespeare’s Globe and this year, at The Public Theater in New York. Her next film, which she is also directing [The Lift], is being produced by Claude Dal Farra [To Leslie]. Lorien advocates for survivors of sexual violence and abuse and works as an ambassador for REFUGE UK. Finally Lori continue her studies at The Jocelyn Jones Studio in LA and at the Royal Drawing School UK, maintaining an interdisciplinary practice in which drawing, performance and narrative inquiry inform one another. Across mediums, her work examines the body, identity, and exposure with uncompromising honesty.
