Lucie Flynn is a Surrey-based contemporary painter creating layered works in spray paint, acrylic and drawing materials that explore women's shared lived experiences through portraiture, abstraction and text.

Statement

My practice is rooted in the stories women carry, those spoken openly and those held quietly beneath the surface. Working with layers of spray paint, acrylic and drawing materials, I create paintings that combine portraiture, abstraction and text to explore resilience, identity and transformation. I am particularly interested in the experiences of women in the second half of life. Through conversations, shared experiences and moments of connection, I gather fragments of language that become woven into my work as reminders of hope, strength and new beginnings. My paintings are built slowly and intuitively. Life often interrupts the process; as a single mother and carer, I return to each piece again and again. Rather than resisting these interruptions, I allow them to become part of the work itself, creating surfaces that hold both time and lived experience. Ultimately, I want my work to offer recognition. I hope viewers see something of themselves within the layers and leave with a sense that their story still matters. For me, midlife is not an ending but a powerful moment of renewal - a time to speak, to be seen and to step more fully into ourselves.
