About

Michaela Sindlerova (b. 2000) is a Czech painter based in London. She completed her BA at UMPRUM, Prague, in 2024 and is currently pursuing an MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London (2026).

Statement

Sindlerova’s work explores personal and collective mythologies through the lenses of Slavic mythology. Drawing on ideas associated with the pre-mythological and pre-linguistic, she approaches myth as a space where meaning is formed before language. Her work is rooted in autobiography, often engaging with Slavic myth as a framework for processing questions of cultural memory. Sindlerova associates the metaphors contained within these folk stories with contemporary experience. Interweaving these two realms enables her to relate to her own lived experience through the universality of a symbol (e.g., its psychoanalytic interpretations) shared across geographical borders. References to origin remain subtle: figures and motifs are redrawn and reduced, being further re-contextualized on canvas. A key reference is the Czech collection A Bouquet by K. J. Erben, which reinterprets Slavic myths through themes shaped by Christian ideology. Ultimately, Sindlerova’s practice seeks to reframe inherited narratives into new, personal structures of meaning. Recent shows: Positions in Contemporary Art: Europe Across Borders, Europe House, London, UK; solo show Když padáš, procitáš / When You Fall, You Awaken, Platforma 15, Prague, CZ; Memorabilia, Moments for Lebanon, Paris, FR. Works are held in private collections in CZ, PT, and UK.
