Statement
Artist Statement My art explores the ethereal threshold where the earthly meets the sublime, a liminal space painted in vibrant light and shadow. Drawing inspiration from the dramatic skies and seascapes of places like the West Coast of Scotland, I render atmospheric scenes imbued with a profound sense of place. Silhouette imagery grounds these evocative spaces, allowing the interplay of light and colour to evoke deep emotional responses, always seeking to capture experiences that transcend the purely visual and hint at that delicate boundary where the spiritual meets the earth. Working primarily with acrylics, pastels, and inks, I paint directly onto the canvas, allowing colours to merge and evolve organically. This direct engagement is driven by a profound passion for colour and its inherent emotive quality, believing it to be an international language. Each stroke attempts to translate raw feeling into form, harnessing strong hues to influence mood and convey the powerful, unspoken narratives of nature. Ultimately, I strive to create paintings that resonate deeply, inviting viewers to experience the profound emotional landscapes found where spirit and earth converge. My Story I grew up in Glasgow where I spent many years working in legal firms and lastly with a large property investment company, finally leaving the office environemnt for good in 2024. My art journey began at school when I dreamed of a career painting, I applied to glasgow School of Artin 1981 and was accepted for my second choice Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee, I made the decision at that point to accept a job offer in a legal firm in Glasgow. Initially believing I would re-apply the following year however the job took over and my art remained on the back burner for several years. I learned a lot about people, their influences, styles, and have always enjoyed being surrounded by strong characters and their energy. As I lived and worked in an urban, city environmentI was surrounded by hugh rise buildings and offices so when I moved to live on the Isle of Bute in 1999I was overwhelmed by the contrast of expansive sea and sky which triggered something in me, and continues to be something I draw on in my work today. I took up part time classes at Glasgow School of Art, Strathclyde University and many artist lead workshops picking up techniques and enjoying being surrounded by inspiring creative people. Now in my 60's Ive recently moved to Troon, on the West Caost of Scotland, already immersed in the exceptional light across the water , to the Isle of Arran. I cant wait to produce new work this year, reflective of my new surroundings.
