Girl With The Golden Mask

About this work

Ever since I was a little girl, I've had a connection with masks. This painting was inspired by a vivid dream that I couldn't stop playing over in my head. The dream goes like this... It was nightfall and I was stood in a derelict barn. An ambiguous figure reached out and placed a golden mask on my face. I was then transported to a vast ocean, riding on the back of mythical sea creature and holding a new born baby. Gold masks have been used across ancient civilisations, as funerary and ritual objects to symbolise eternal life, divine status and a protected passage into the afterlife. Unlike flesh, which decays, gold does not tarnish, it is timeless. Its reflective colour links it directly to the sun deities, symbolising light, rebirth, and the daily cycle of renewal.

Autobiographical artist based in East Yorkshire, working predominately in acrylics. She paints her dreams.
