About this work
Incision” examines the impact of social media on our self-perception and the growing prevalence of body dysmorphia (BDD). Body dysmorphia can make it difficult to see ourselves clearly, often leading to endless comparison, self-criticism and the pursuit of cosmetic alterations or surgical procedures in an attempt to quiet persistent thoughts. My process begins by taking nude self-portraits in my most vulnerable state. Once I have selected the reference image I feel most drawn to, I begin the underpainting. Working with expressive, abstract brushwork I build layers of visceral flesh, emphasising the skin’s imperfections, folds, and textures. By resisting idealised representations of the body, the painting confronts the unrealistic beauty standards perpetuated through digital culture and encourages a more honest engagement with the human form.
