Solitude

About this work

Solitude is created from one hundred decoupaged images sourced from vintage encyclopedias, atlases and travel books. Small illustrations of hills, mountains, coastlines and distant landscapes are carefully collected, grouped by theme, and arranged into a structured geometric composition. Many of the images are taken from books up to approximately seventy years old, with several produced using traditional lithographic printing methods. Their softened greens, muted violets, ochres and faded blues give the work a nostalgic, painterly quality, evoking remembered places, imagined journeys and quiet moments of escape. Each original plate is carefully extracted from the book, hand-bonded onto birch plywood, and laser cut into individual 3 cm dots. These fragments are then mounted geometrically, transforming scattered landscape imagery into a calm, ordered field of colour and texture. The work explores stillness, distance and the human desire to find peace within fragments of the wider world. 55 x 55 cm Framed in a white box frame. Protected with museum-quality UV perspex glazing to help prevent fading. Carefully wrapped and packaged in a custom-made box with protective corners for safe worldwide shipping.

About the artist

Amelia Coward is a British mixed media artist whose practice unites colour, geometry and material craft through hand-painted wood and vintage maps. Trained at St Martins and the RCA, her work explores colour interaction, place and memory, and is held in private and corporate collections internationally.
