Statement

The issue of mental health has thankfully come to the fore in society. Marcia's work channels that theme. She draws on her own personal experiences in order to explore the issue of unhealthy interpersonal relationships, as a result of societal pressure. Her aim is to produce images that acknowledge the intense emotions that stem from these experiences. Bereavement, divorce, domestic conflict, conjures feelings of loss, insecurity, confusion, anxiety, emotional and physical displacement and a depleting sense of identity. Marcia's work is figurative, predominately taken from her self-image. The work has a strong sculptural element. She enjoys playing with composition, dramatic angles and foreshortening to enhance the sense of emotion within her pieces. Her palette is generally muted and consistent making her work recognisable. Marcia's treatment of flesh is influenced by the work of Rembrandt, Lucien Freud and Jenny Saville. The 'nod' to abstraction, particularly in her earlier pieces from the 'Within' series is influenced by Francis Bacon's uncompromising self-portraits.
