About this work
Shelter was a piece I created as a response to the trauma of mental and physical displacement. The aim was to present an image that conveyed a sense of defiance in the face of a situation beyond personal control and depict the self- determination to reground and recreate a sense of self. I used oil on machine textured board prepared with several coats of Gesso. My use of this board was intentional, it's heavily textured on one side, used to clad and make good. Visually, close up the paint dissipates and fragments, but further away the image has volume, is cohesive, looks stable and intact. I used me self image for this piece. My life experience was the source of my inspiration, and gave me the motivation to validate this experience in a form that the viewer may understand and appreciate.
