About this work
This work is my response to insecurity, often connected to feeling the need to be loved/liked by the people in our lives. People pleasing, self compromise and sacrifice is fuelled by this desperate need. When we cannot find the ability to fill the gap of self love, then the dependence on others to do so becomes consuming and inevitably self destructive. The canvas is prepared with Gesso, textured paper and archival glue, before numerous layers of thin oil paint is applied.The dark background creates depth, isolation and contrast, enabling the figure to hold a bold, dominance in the piece. This technique called chiaroscuro was used by many of the old masters such as Rembrandt, Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi to create mood and drama, intensifying the focus and emotion of the figures and the painting overall.
