About this work

My inspiration begin in the landscape, in the charged moment before dark when the sky becomes something else entirely. Sky, water, the last light dissolving into the horizon: these are my recurring territories, not as places but as emotional states. This painting was born from a dramatic sunset at the sea, the sky on fire just before a storm broke. In that charged, electric light, the clouds and branches became something else: faces emerging, figures watching, presences made visible by the intensity of the moment. Built through layers of mark-making and concealment, it asks whether we find what we look for in the sky, or whether the sky finds us.

About the artist

Agnieszka Lokaj is a London-based contemporary painter working in acrylics and oils, whose practice explores human connection — to nature, to others, and to the hidden and visible parts of the self. Her work has been shown widely across the UK, she is a recipient of Arts Council England funding, and she was longlisted for the Women in Art Emerging Artist Prize 2024.
