About this work

My paintings begin in the landscape, in the charged moment before dark when the sky becomes something else entirely. Sky, water, the last light dissolving into the horizon: these are my recurring territories, not as places but as emotional states. In this painting, the sunset becomes something more, faces and figures emerge from the burning light, half-hidden, half-present. Built through layers of concealment and revelation, the work asks what we search for when we look up at dusk. Who do we see there? Who do we need to see? A painting about presence, loss, and the deep human instinct to find the people we love in the world around us

About the artist

Agnieszka Lokaj is a London-based contemporary painter working in acrylics and oils, whose practice explores human connection — to nature, to others, and to the hidden and visible parts of the self. Her work has been shown widely across the UK, she is a recipient of Arts Council England funding, and she was longlisted for the Women in Art Emerging Artist Prize 2024.
