About this work

The portrait of Steve was inspired by the strong powerful imagery that Steve uses in his photographic self portraits. Steve is an enigmatic character with a strong robust physique. He is covered in a life time worth of tattoos. Tattoos can give a viewer an idea of a person and what they wish to convey in their body art. Body art makes a person become a work of art. Watt enjoys painting tattoos and she has many herself. Steve takes photos in mirrors but then puts multiple poses into one image. In this portrait again we see the spread of golden wings. His strength is symbolised by the snarling tiger. Mouth open and showing sharp teeth. The laurel leaf wreath is an ancient symbol of victory. Used by Roman after battle, and in the Greeks it also takes on the spiritualism of evolving. This shows Steve has endured over the great loss of the love of his life. Again we see an exotic and colourful bird. This relates to Steve and his visually exotic physical appearance.
