Statement

My art explores the intricate landscape of loss, love, and strength, navigating the spaces between presence and absence. My recent work delves into the profound experience of my father's death, integrating his personal effects—a smoking pipe, an old hat, casino dice—into my paintings, photographs, and video. These found objects are more than relics; they are vessels of memory, scent, and presence, which I transform and recontextualize. This process of re-imagining artifacts becomes a way to confront and preserve, exploring how division and connection coexist, and how something broken can still hold. My practice, often featuring the human form and abstracted landscapes, simultaneously reveals strength and fragility. I deliberately cultivate an unfinished edge in my works, a visual echo of loss's incomplete nature, inviting viewers to contribute their own narratives. Colour, form, and light drive my creative decisions, guiding me away from over-definition towards a more authentic, snapshot-like moment. My approach is informed by Joan Didion's understanding of grief as an ongoing landscape and Emily Dickinson's assertion that the loved remain present through love. I weave together art historical references from Michelangelo's unfinished drawings, Titian's masterful colour, and Rembrandt's gestural fluency with the spiritual intensity of Bill Viola's video art. My layered compositions strive to make sense of our complex world, offering a visual language for reconnection, reevaluation, and progression. My work decodes personal stories, aiming to mirror and resonate with universal human experiences.
