Statement

As a portrait painter, I have always been interested in people and the human figure. Only recently have I created my own collection; this work is about myself and the reaction to changing stages in my life. It began as a cathartic exercise when my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. As a carer I struggled physically and mentally with this new situation. My coping strategy was to express emotions through creativity and my painting. Recently I have turned sixty, an age marker that I wasn’t looking forward to. However, I’ve been surprised at how positive and energised I feel. My work has been influenced by this too. Although I have used myself as a muse in my work, and my images are very much entwined with my personal emotional reaction to my life, I think many people can relate to these paintings as similar issues reflect in their own lives. My self portraits use my own head but they are abstracted by the influence of the stone and rock formations I see on my walks in N. Devon.
