About this work
Daniel is a portrait of Daniel Angelus. It shows three faces of Daniel. Each showing the viewer the different parts of Daniels identity. Daniel is originally from North Wales. Important to the story of this painting is how we met. As an artist I notice interesting individuals. On a cold, grey day, when the sea was icy Daniel was on a local beach walking in the sea. Holding his guitar, pretending to play it. The dark sky is shown on the right of the painting. Approaching him he told me that he was filming a video for his music production. Daniel is a singer/ songwriter. He tours as a solo artist and also has won awards for composing film scores. Daniel also speaks out openly about the mental health issues he suffers from due to childhood trauma. On the left of the painting, we see fiery red streaks running down beside his screaming face. His mouth wide and his look at us for help. There are white silhouettes of chains symbolising how we can be trapped by our mental health. The snake is the beast of these issues. it comes from behind him to share the scream. In the centre Daniel is with his guitar and appears relaxed. The music is taking over the anxiety. His creative life is also his healing time. In the third portrait Daniel look up and listens to music on his headphones. Maybe he is hearing music he has written. For me, the portrait shows that although we struggle in life with mental health that we can also achieve personal goals
