About this work
This portrait began as a single portrait. I had also began the portrait of Mia. Lapinus is an artist, arts organiser, gay activist and fashionista. Then I discovered that they were close friends. So, two separate portraits became a diptych. They can either be connected or displayed as individual paintings. The diptych is visually connected by matching colours. There is an eagle in the centre. The eagle has its head on the Mia painting, and its body on the Lapinus painting. But if the two were separated the eagle parts would still make sense to a viewer. Both Mia and Lapinus like to dress up when they go dancing at London clubs. Mia is shown with her dark hair with a playful pink ribbon and is wearing velvet cat ears. Purple streaks run through her hair. She has a large cross around her neck to show her interest in religion and identity as a Goth. This is further symbolised by the raven. The raven bird has been used as a symbol in gothic literature for hundreds of years. It has dark feathers and is shown horror movies as evil and death and the night. Lapinus is known for his elaborate dress and mask wearing. In his portrait he is wearing a shiny mask with pointed ears. He is adorned with lace and ropes. His coat bright red and furry. His ornate dress is added to by the many eagle feathers around his head.
