About this work
This is a dual portrait of Mick Westmorland. Actor, musician, composer and songwriter. His band is called Micko and the Mellotronics. Playing lay regular live gigs, Micko sings and plays the guitar. The many colourful lights in their bands stage shows were an instant inspiration to the artist. Micko was also an actor in the movie Velvet Goldmine, which was the source for the bottom portrait in this painting. The 1998 movie addressed gender and sexual identity within the Glam Rock music era. Micko played a character called Jack Fairy. Again, the portrait is derived from a performance scene. In which Micko is dressed in a long glamorous open fronted gown. With large, feathered wings almost springing from each side of his back. The backdrop is full of browns. Spotlights show up in yellow globes of light. These have been reproduced behind the top portrait. As an artist you can be creative in how you use images. Mix up and distort to suit your imagination or visually balance the painting. The bird on the right corner was taken from an image of Micko as a teenager. When he was already aware of his need to be expressive as an individual. This can be found in a very interesting interview on Micko and his journey as a creative www.suitsandtheplatformboot.com Micko Westmoreland Identity Attitude and Goldmines.
