About this work

I used the common misconception that the title derives from the Latin, mortuus lacus ('Dead Lake') dating back to the Black Death. Despite this somewhat dark interpretation, the work has a far lighter contemplative mood and an air of haunting mystique. Using acrylics, fibres, and collage, the painting features a 3-dimensional and highly tactile application. The main idea was to create an impression of a reflection over a still or stagnant stretch of water within a slightly overcast area of wooded heathland in early autumn.
