About this work
We Want To Fly began life as a contemplation of how can a life study be more than just that. This is something that fascinates me, and has done throughout my practice. We are trained to see the figure model as an aid to our drawing and expressionistic development and practice. Yet models are people within their own external life outside of the studio. A model can become a portrait or have an added narrative or become part of a visual story. More than a tool to copy. Here this model with her red shaven head has become symbolic of women wanting freedom. The bird is more than a tattoo, it has come to life from her skin and wants to shed its entrapment.
