About the artist

Anna Rolskaya

About

Anna Rolskaya is a Lisbon-based abstract painter who works in acrylic, oil stick, and mixed media. Classically trained and color-sensitive from her watercolor experience, her work draws on floral forms and features translucent, layered washes. Her paintings have been exhibited at The Other Art Fair London and Lisbon Art Fair, and are held in private collections in Europe, the UK, the US, and Australia.

Statement

I have a deep sense of resonance with colour, a connection to a fundamental part of myself that I only became aware of through painting. I usually draw inspiration from color references before deciding on direction. The layers are kept translucent, like stained glass. Gesso and darker tones are introduced only where the composition needs structure and visual hierarchy. Layers are deliberately placed in tension with the one before, and where they cross, new possibilities arise that guide my subsequent actions. At every stage, potential options turn into actual choices, each with a certain cost. I make these costs clear by recognizing and incorporating awkward or sharp features into the composition rather than removing them. This creates a “closure” without complete resolution, illustrating a state where contradictions coexist, something everyday life seldom provides. This method aligns with Nietzsche's idea of amor fati, accepting the whole, including difficulties and strengths.
