About

Scottish mixed-media artist Arlene Peters creates atmospheric works spanning abstract realism and textured contemporary abstraction. Inspired by emotion, nature and the Scottish landscape, her layered paintings explore light, stillness, movement and connection.

Statement

My work begins with emotion, intuition and a connection to the natural world. Working across abstract realism and textured contemporary abstraction, I create layered paintings that explore atmosphere, memory, femininity and the quiet strength found in both people and landscape. The Scottish landscape, particularly the Highlands, is a continuing influence. I am drawn to changing light, mist, weather and the sense of stillness and movement that can exist within the same place. I rarely begin a painting knowing exactly where it will end. Using mixed media, acrylics, oils, texture, washes and glazing, I build and remove layers, responding intuitively to what develops on the surface. Allowing the work to evolve rather than controlling the outcome has become an important part of my practice. Ultimately, I want my paintings to be felt as much as seen. I hope they create a moment of connection, while leaving enough space for the viewer to find something of their own within the work.
